Common Foot Aliments & Foot Treatments

Athlete’s Foot

This very common fungal infection is usually found around the toes. As common as athlete’s foot most certainly is, it can still cause discomfort, itching and in some cause pain.

What Causes Athlete’s Foot
Most people get exposed to the fungus that causes athlete’s foot in places where it’s common for groups to be barefoot. This can include gyms, pools and showers.
The athlete’s foot fungus thrives in a warm and damp environment.

Athlete’s Foot Symptoms
Some of the more common Athlete’s foot symptoms include blistering, cracking, itching and a peeling of the foot.
Although the infection is usually found between the toes, cracks and blisters can develop in the heels and on the skin of the toes.

Athlete’s Foot Treatments
While the infection is inflamed the person should take extra care in keeping their feet clean and dry.
Chemists sell a variety of over the counter foot treatments for athlete’s foot.
However, if the infection is spreading or getting worse, we recommend booking an appointment with Podi Footcare today.

Bunions

Bunions are bumps that develop on the large toe joint.

A bunion can cause warping of the big toe, causing the toe to turn inward. Doctors and podiatrists call this “Hallux Valgus”

Women who wear narrow footwear are at greater risk of developing bunions.

Bunion Causes

As stated, bunions can develop on individuals who wear narrow or tight shoes.

Bunions may also be genetic as it’s been observed that a family history of bunions is also considered a risk factor. Conditions like polio or rheumatoid arthritis can also increase the likelihood of an individual developing a bunion.

Bunion Symptoms
  • A bump on the side of the foot
  • Tenderness around the big toe
  • A corn or a callus on the bone below the big toe
  • A patient may find it difficult to move their big toe
  • Pain in the big toe while the patient is walking

Bunion Foot Treatments
First and foremost a patient should always try and wear properly fitted, flat shoes. Bunion pads can also be purchased at most chemists which help protect the bunion from excessive pressure.

Our team of podiatrists can recommend a foot treatment plan to address a person’s bunions.
